If You’re Ever in Oklahoma
Written by J.J.Cale and originally performed in a non-acoustic setting, this song was exposed to the bluegrass scene through the Front Porch String Band. Gypsy Wind offers an up-tempo, progressive edge to this tune. The arrangement is full of exciting instrumental breaks and includes a special guest appearance by Mr. Billy Sandlin on lead guitar from the original Front Porch Band.
Hills of Alabama
This song’s smooth lyrical lines mixed with Claire Lynch’s angelic vocals catapulted the Rebel-1624 release to recognition and new heights. Today the Front Porch String Band is a household name in bluegrass circles. Gypsy Wind blends solid instrumentation, creativity and strong vocal work by Kristen Holloway to complete their rendition of this beautiful Claire Lynch original.
Minor Swing
This piece was written by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli in the 1930’s when they collaborated as a part of the Quintet de Hot Club de France. A quintessential classic, it was recorded in November of 1937 but is still one of the most requested songs in Gypsy Wind’s repertoire. The blue sound and the perfect simplicity of the minor arpeggio appeal to the group’s feel and up-tempo style. With percussion and flute engaging in the musical role-play, Gypsy’s arrangement of this timeless piece has extended it new life.
Summertime
From Porgy and Bess, this great American jazz standard’s deep-seeded melody has ingrained itself into the fabric of America’s musical culture. In essence, it is older than Apple Pie and Gypsy Wind has just sat down to the table... enjoy.

This beautiful melody written by Tony Rice is no stranger to the studio. It was first recorded by the David Grisman Quintet in the mid 70’s when Tony was working with the mandolinist from the west coast. It then became the title cut for one of the Tony Rice Unit’s many projects produced for Spacegrass Productions. Mr. Rice recorded it a third time in 1995 with John Carlini on the Sugar Hill release, River Suite for Two Guitars. Now spanning four decades, Gypsy Wind gives birth to its arrangement of this acoustic classic. This rendition blends musical texture from the song’s past and present. From its past, the arrangement captures the melodic intervention of Grisman’s Quintet and Rice’s rich, idiosyncratic harmonic depth. Gypsy’s new generation of players brings rhythmic drive and swing to this piece. Kristen’s five year old son says that it simply sounds like, "new life waking up in the morning sun; especially butterflies, Dad."
